Christ Church Gardens

On 16 June 2000, the hundredth anniversary to the hour of its first opening as a public garden, Christ Church Garden was re-opened as a 'green oasis' in the dense townscape of north Southwark.

The project had a number of unusual features:

* The client group was made up of a variety of stake holders with special expertise in the area, history, or maintenance of the garden
* The work was funded by public, corporate and individual donations
* It was designed through creative public consultation and participation
* It was delivered for less than half the cost estimate of the outline design, whilst using bespoke furniture and York Stone paving
* Now [2004] it is used not only for safe pedestrian routes but also for its distinct areas: sun trap, contemplative garden, scented garden, beer garden, formal church frontage
* a place to eat sandwiches on a sunny day

* Awarded The London Spade 2000 for innovation in public garden design.
