Coach House, Ottershaw

An 1848 Victorian coach house in a substantial plot had been converted to residential use in the 1970s. Our task was to turn this into a functioning family home, making the most of its historic character.

First impressions were of a ship at sea, an ornate object in an almost featureless field of grass - so an early task was to research the history and the site and develop a landscape master-plan, so that we could understand the external spaces to which the new building would in future relate. Once this was done designs for the house could be developed. The project involved new openings internally and externally, to command views of the garden and make better interconnection within the house. Original coach room doors had been infilled with brickwork, which was removed to create a double set of folding sliding doors, so that the room could be opened up to a stone paved terrace incorporating the original granite setts.

On the upper floor a series of new dormers were added, trasforming not only the usable space, but the external appearance of the building.

Some of the landscape plans was implemented, lake and maze are yet to come.
